Fragment of a Dream

Not a new fic -- I originally wrote and posted this in 2018, but it seemed appropriate to give it a new life now.

Solas paces through the woods until he can see the firelight flickering through the trees, smell the wood smoke and halla hide, and hear the sounds of laughter and song. He pauses, but the halla do not startle at his presence, so he comes closer still, close enough to make out faces around the fire and the glint of golden hair in the flames’ light.

She wears a smile such as he has hardly ever seen on her before, wide and bright. As other Dalish beckon to her, she downs the last of her cup and rises, taking their hands, wheeling together in a dance beside the fire. Her hair swings in heavy plaits as she whirls, throwing her head back and laughing.

She looks younger than he ever knew her. Sometimes dreamers make themselves so.

This is her dream, after all. He has no place here, but sometimes he finds himself here, all the same. He lingers on the outskirts, watching her and her folk laugh and sing and dance together.

When he first awoke, the spectacle of them dancing, with the marks of their masters on their faces, would have torn his heart into shreds of rage and misery. All the struggle, all the sacrifice, and for nothing? For this?

But she taught him to see deeper. Now, in the shadows of her dream, he sees the joy of fellowship, the keen pleasures of rhythm and movement, and his heart grows sore for other reasons.

She spins out of the circle of dancers, stumbling and laughing, and turns toward him, and her eyes grow wide.

Solas freezes. He had not even noticed himself creeping closer, like a starving dog.

But she sees him, and her face is young but her eyes are her own, and she holds out her hand.

He should withdraw now and depart: leave her to these dreams of a time and home long gone. Let her take what comfort she can from them, and return to his own work.

And yet. Her lips move, and form his name -- one his current confederates do not speak, nor even know -- and he steps forward, out of the trees.

Dream though this is, her hand feels solid and her arm strong as she draws him closer, tipping her head back to search him with her gaze.

“You should join us,” she says.

“This is not my place,” he tells her.

Her brow knits, as if this makes no sense. “It could be.”

“Vhenan --”

She cuts him off with a kiss, throwing her arms around his neck with enough force to surprise him. She tastes warm, heady, of pine and lightning. He responds before he can think, and stares at her in astonishment when she withdraws.

Her eyes are bright beneath half-shut lids. Her mouth curls up at one side, slyly.

He saw her drunk but once, reeling her way out of the tavern. “Bull,” she had said in answer to the query in his startled expression. “Somethin’ ‘bout the dragon. Some… gods.” She had rested her forehead against his shoulder, steadying herself. He had put his arms around her, to help.

“Perhaps you should return to your chamber,” he’d suggested, more amused than anything else.

“Please,” she’d replied, muffled, and so he’d escorted her up the stairs, keenly conscious of the lean of her slim frame against his shoulder.

She is less drunk now, though memory’s intoxication is potent. “Stay,” she says, softly as the music rises behind her. “For one night. One hour, Solas. See how we live now.”

“I cannot,” he protests. Should not, stands closer to the truth.

“Cannot,” she says. “Or don’t wish to?”

Her gaze is all challenge. When he hesitates to answer, she starts to draw away.

This is the worst kind of folly, but he does not want to resist her. “An hour,” he says.

She smiles, victorious and dazzling, and draws him toward the light.

Holly 4 (can I request Iwyn and Branwen Lavellan?): What does your OC believe to be the luckiest event in their life?  Is this an accurate assessment?  Or was there actually more than simply luck at play?

this is a really interesting question, because for both of them - this is probably once of the areas where the siblings are more alike than different - both of them generally does not subscribe to things happening because of luck. It's about skills. I made that happen, both of them would say.

That said, Iwyn would never admit it, but she got lucky during her valleslin trial; she tried to kill a bear, and ended up tumbling down a ravine, getting a cut from a sharp rock that almost blinded her. In the end she got the bear, but she was lucky she didn't lose her eye or her life.

Branwen would point to the, well less luck and more fortunate happenstance that his sisters meddlings as Inquisitor had more non-Dalish messengers come by their clan - this is how he met his eventual wife.

Hi I'm Than I use they/them pronouns currently :3 This is an 18+ blog just for my own comfort, as I am now ancient (in my early 30s lmao) Activity levels will vary here because of who I am as a person but I'll try to be consistent!

Dragon Age OCs: Branwen Lavellan

BRANWEN LAVELLAN

Elf, Rogue (two-weapon style), Tempest specialization

Branwen was approximately 30 and one of the chief scouts for her clan when her Keeper sent her to observe the Conclave. She had a healthy distrust of humans, and navigated her first days after the Conclave very carefully, trying hard not to alienate the powerful humans who now seemed to be depending on her. She felt more drawn to the non-humans in the group, though, and became friendly with Varric and Solas quickly. Branwen has a deeply ingrained desire to protect people she considers under her care, which served her well as more and more authority became attached to her. Her patience and steadfastness in the face of the Inquisition’s challenges won her a lot of loyalty. Her clan was attacked, scattered, and lost in her absence, though, a mistake which still haunts her.

Over time, she developed good relationships with just about everyone in the Inquisition. She and Cassandra took quite a while to get past their very different belief systems, as did Branwen and Sera, but in both cases they developed solid friendships.

Branwen had never had a deep romantic relationship before, but her relationship with Solas quickly became complicated. From her point of view, they would frequently have intimate, vulnerable moments, and then he’d suddenly pull back and become more distant. She knew there were things he wasn’t saying, but chose not to push for more information. Even so, they became steadily closer:

Branwen thought that Solas must have suffered some harm from a group of Dalish in the past, and regularly (gently) argued with him about his perspective on the Dalish. They were in love, she thought, and they didn’t talk about the future, but she still had hopes.

Then she drank from the Well of Sorrows, over Solas’s objections, and the gulf between their views and positions became incredibly obvious. She kept her vallaslin, thank you very much, and let him go, and wondered what he might be doing while she nursed her broken heart. Even after the events of Trespasser, she still hopes that she can persuade Solas away from his current course – she has seen him act with compassion and reason, and she kind of thinks he’s avoiding her so that she doesn’t get a chance to talk to him directly.

I’m not totally sure what she’s been up to since Trespasser, beyond looking for survivors from her clan. Officially, the Inquisition is dissolved, but she’s clearly still working with allies in a less public way.

I was so very excited when @thevikingwoman commissioned me to do a portrait of Iwyn's brother. I don't get the opportunity to do many male portraits so this was a wonderful challenge and pleasure!

10. Do they have any markings, piercings or scars?

NARAYANI — has her vallaslin (dirthamen), which she's very proud of. she also has a couple of noticeable scars, including one through her right eyebrow and one along her left jawline. she probably has a few other scars, but none on her face. her ears and nose are pierced. MINAH — has a scar above one eye that she keeps covered with her bangs, plus a few other smaller ones. she has multiple ear piercings and a septum piercing. I still haven't decided if she has tattoos or not; I go back and forth ever time I think about it. BRANWEN — multiple ear piercings, maybe a nose piercing? a handful of scars (mostly small) and numerous tattoos—a compass, birds in flight, her colors on her inner wrist, constellations, and one over her sternum that's just barely visible when she leaves her shirt unbuttoned, which moves (it's a stoppered diamond flask with the ocean inside and the waves reflect her heartbeat/emotional state)

27. What’s their family like? Who’s in it? What’s their relationship with them?

NARAYANI — her birth parents died when she was young and she only has hazy memories of them; she was found alone and abandoned and raised mostly by the clan lavellan elders and so considers the clan her family. she had a sort of grandmotherly figure she was particularly close to, but they had a falling out over rani's desire to spend more time in the human world/revenge her parents' death/become a clan spy/assassin, and the elder died before they reconciled. rani regrets that. MINAH — her parents are dead and she's estranged from everyone she left behind, but she considers the troupe something of a family—a very hodgepodge, slightly annoying, much-beloved family. BRANWEN — her mother died when she was 15 and her father retreated into himself when he couldn't cope with the grief, so for a few years it was just bran and her baby brother (he's 12 years younger than her). when she ran away from home she met the owners of the rundstream tavern, who took her in, and then later she had the luckrunner and her crew, which are sort of her family too, especially her first mate haskon. (and eniko, and sabine. more than anything, maybe, eniko and sabine.)

35. What are they like as a friend?

NARAYANI — somewhat abrasive but extraordinarily steadfast and loyal. she'll call it like she sees it and won't take any shit, and it takes ages to get through her walls, but once you do she'll stick through thick and thin MINAH — a little distant and superficial, but she tends to show up when it counts. she's the sort of person who can keep a conversation rotating around the other person for so long that you could almost miss that she never says anything of substance about herself, but the way she plays it off never seems as strange or defensive as it really is. that said, if you're looking for a fun time or a bit of entertainment, minah's 100% the person who can hook you up BRANWEN — delightful. super present, cares a lot, genuinely outgoing and fun and supportive. the kind of friend who always engineers a good time but will also be up with you at 3am dealing with The Shit. we all deserve a friend like bran.

49. What are some themes tied to your character’s story?

NARAYANI — death/loss is a big one. becoming the monster/loving the monster, and also becoming the mask. there's a bit of flirting with becoming the villain, but in the end she disappears back into the shadows—though who knows, maybe that's still becoming the villain MINAH — masks and truth, performance versus the self (and performance of the self), past mistakes and redemption BRANWEN — freedom, the conflict between duty and participating in a corrupt system, masks and the self (are you seeing a theme here)

53. Expectations vs Reality: what did you expect and what did you get with this character?

NARAYANI — I expected her to push through and become the mask and be the (in the open) counterpoint to solas' figure in the shadows (villain4villain romance!!), but when the final choice arrived I just couldn't see her sticking to the inquisition—at her core, she's a creature of loss, and even the bloated horrible burden of the inquisition was just one more thing for her to lose. MINAH — well first of all I expected her to be more talkative, but turns out that's really hard to RP all the time! she's also a little blunter than I'd like her to be (her high CHA vs my low CHA) and maybe a little less suave. such is the nature of RP; I make my peace with it BRANWEN — I thought she'd be a little more freewheeling but also a little less wary; she turned out to be kind of disinterested in getting too involved in the party's issues, and it took some time/effort for her to fully engage. then she did and shit kinda hit the fan. classic D&D.
