Holly 4 (can I request Iwyn and Branwen Lavellan?): What does your OC believe to be the luckiest event in their life?  Is this an accurate assessment?  Or was there actually more than simply luck at play?

this is a really interesting question, because for both of them - this is probably once of the areas where the siblings are more alike than different - both of them generally does not subscribe to things happening because of luck. It's about skills. I made that happen, both of them would say.

That said, Iwyn would never admit it, but she got lucky during her valleslin trial; she tried to kill a bear, and ended up tumbling down a ravine, getting a cut from a sharp rock that almost blinded her. In the end she got the bear, but she was lucky she didn't lose her eye or her life.

Branwen would point to the, well less luck and more fortunate happenstance that his sisters meddlings as Inquisitor had more non-Dalish messengers come by their clan - this is how he met his eventual wife.

So this is a prequel to the little piece @thevikingwoman wrote, in which Sene and Branwen somehow meet and smoke elfroot together in the woods. They are the same age (fifteen) and it’s Arlathvhen, a big Dalish gathering outside Wycome. This is completely self-indulgent YA puppy stuff. But it was super fun to write. I think they like each other? Thanks for getting it started, vikingwoman <3

Elves in Nature

Sene was sitting way up high in a tree, her legs dangling. She was fifteen and way too tall, and this tended to freak boys out. Or at least the boys in her clan. So she decided to make the most of it and so she spent her time getting even taller by hanging out in the treetops. She would get pissed off and threaten other hunters with arrows if they got too close to her territory. Sometimes, back in Ansburg, she’d leave her family’s compound and be gone for days. There was nothing her parents could do. To her, they were boring and ineffectual.

It was Arlathvhen, or whatever the fuck. Too many Dalish in one place at once if you asked her. They were somewhere outside Wycome. Early that morning, she had sneaked inside the city and bought a bag of elfroot off a girl city elf who liked her hair. Looks like a star, exploding! said the girl. Sene blushed but did not catch her name. Now, she was way up high in a tree, smoking till her head became a balloon. A couple times, other hunters would pass below, and she would let them, because she was busy, and because it had been slim pickings all day with nothing to shoot but lizards in the brush. You all can kiss my ass, she said to them inside her own brain. One day, thought Sene, I’ll be free.

At some point, however, a boy passed by who was cuter than the rest. Kind of short, but they were all kind of short to Sene. He wasn’t so short. Plus, she was bored and kind of lonely after hours by herself, ignoring her duties, away from her Keeper who she hated like the Blight. She had been lying down on a long, heavy branch when she saw this boy. He was practicing a spell all by himself. Something with electricity in his fingertips, and this was exciting. She sat up and swung her feet over the tree branch and she said, “Hey.”

He looked up right away, surprised. He didn’t have his vallaslin yet, but this seemed typical, especially for a mage, and a boy. Boys were always late to the party. At first, when she saw him, she could tell he thought maybe something weird was going on, like he wasn’t used to strange girls up in the trees, but then, once he saw her face, that she was young like him, and he smelled the smoke, he smiled. “Hey,” he said.

“I’m Sene,” she said.

“Branwen,” he said.

She showed him the joint. Then she said, “Want to hang out?”

It should have been all wrong and awkward, that a pretty girl would ask him this in the middle of the woods, and yet, there she was, and she was asking, so. “Sure,” he said.

He climbed up the tree. She had her bow dangling off the tip of the branch, and he hitched his staff to the string so that it stayed. She passed him the joint right away. It wasn’t new to him, the elfroot. The girl, however, was. And she was tall for a girl. Really tall. He took a strong hit, showing off. “I think I know you,” he said, smiling. “Lavellan, right? One of the booze elves.”

“Don’t get me started,” said Sene.

And then he got kind of hypnotized. Her face—she already had her vallaslin. Just these little wings of Mythal on her cheekbones. It was fascinating. It made him curious. “Your vallaslin,” he said. “How long have you had it?”

“Since eleven, I think?” said Sene. He could sense her then, withdrawing. “It’s not as big of a deal for archers, I promise.”

“What did you have to do to get it?” He passed her the joint.

“Basically live in the woods alone for a week,” she said, smoking, handing it back. “Take down a bear. Some other animals. Clean them, et cetera. Typical bullshit.”

“You took down a bear all by yourself when you were eleven?”

“Yeah,” said Sene. “But it took me like two days of relentless stalking. It wasn’t easy.” She blushed. She glanced at him through a cloud of white smoke. “You have magic?”

“Yes,” he said, puffing up a little bit. “It’s no big deal.”

“Will you show me something? A spell?”

It was so fast.

“You want me to show you magic?” he said.

“We don’t have mages in my clan,” she said.

He took a hit, gathering his confidence, then he passed her the joint. “What do you want to see?” he said.

“Can you make fire?”

He nodded, readily. “Sure. That’s easy.” He held out his palm, closed it once, turned it over, showed her the back of his fist. He watched as she watched, rapt, the smoke releasing from her lips, clouding her freckled cheeks. He then turned his fist back over, opened it. There was a little flame, right there, in the center of his palm. Sort of dancing, beautiful and pinkish orange. Her eyes grew—green and bloodshot. She smiled huge, looked at him, and clapped.

“That’s amazing,” she said.

“Thanks,” he said.

She finished the joint, put it out on the tree trunk, then tucked it into her pocket. This disappointed him. He wasn’t ready to leave yet. “Is that it?” he said.

“Nope,” she said. “I bought a whole bag.” She showed him, then she set about rolling another joint. She was fast at it but a little sloppy. He didn’t much care about that. It was the good kind of root. Her clan was rich. They were rich, and everybody knew it. He wondered what it must have been like to run around on a huge compound like the one where she lived. It made the tips of his ears burn a little bit. He would never understand that life. But then.

“Can you light it?” she said, wanting more magic.

He smirked a little, his cheeks warm. “Sure,” he said, and he lit it with a palm full of fire, and then they smoked some more, and it wasn’t long till she was lying down, looking up at him with her head in his lap, this huge nest of red hair, and she was asking him things about his life, and he knew his sister Iwyn would be looking for him by now, but there was nothing he could do about that, because he didn’t know what else to do but keep talking to this girl named Sene. She was the weirdest girl he had ever met, and the tallest, and she had a big bag of elfroot, and for whatever reason, she liked him. He could have stayed there all day.
